PTEN — Folded Ribbon Model

Size

Description

The folded ribbon model of PTEN, a tumor suppressor protein.

The Data

The amino acid chain folds into a precise three-dimensional shape, guided entirely by the chemical interactions between its building blocks. This piece renders the final folded ribbon model of PTEN — the structure that carries out its work as a tumor suppressor in the cell.

It is the third and final panel in a series following the central dogma of molecular biology: from DNA sequence, to protein sequence, to folded structure. The ultimate shape and function of every protein is derived entirely from the information written in DNA.

About Genetics of Design

Genetics of Design is a small studio turning scientific and geographic data into quietly-composed visual work. Each piece begins with a real dataset — road networks, genomes, star catalogs, species records — and ends with a printed or pen-plotted artifact you can hang on a wall. Every edition is small, numbered, and accompanied by the provenance of the data it came from.
