About
Genetics of Design is an algorithmic art studio that transforms scientific and natural data into physical artwork. Every piece begins with real data — gene structures, coastlines, star catalogs, facial geometries, living ecosystems — interpreted through custom code into composition, density, and line. The result is work you can read as well as see.
The studio is the work of Nabil Azamy and Anthony DeSantis. The two met while working together at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory's McCombie Lab, and their shared appreciation for the intersection of science and craft has shaped the studio's direction from the beginning. Nabil brings over fifteen years of experience in genetics and diagnostics, building computational pipelines that process and interpret genomic data. Anthony's background bridges robotics and content production. Genetics of Design grew from a simple question: what would that data look like if you let it become art?
Every algorithm is written by hand. Every composition is a human decision — what to reveal, what to abstract, how to let the data speak.
Two physical forms
Our work exists in two tiers. Pen-plotted originals are drawn by a mechanical arm guiding real ink pens across paper, one-of-a-kind with subtle variations in pressure and flow that no two pieces share. Limited-edition giclée prints are archival fine-art prints made to order, in small numbered editions, each shipped with a signed data-provenance card.
Five categories
The work is organized by the kind of data behind it:
- Omics — DNA sequences, chromosomal architecture, protein folds.
- Terrain — road networks, coastlines, elevation, city grids.
- Ad Astra — star catalogs, exoplanet data, spectral and orbital mechanics.
- Visage — facial geometry; rendered portraits of significant individuals.
- Life — wildlife imagery, species distributions, ecological data.
Every piece carries its data provenance — the source, what was extracted, and how — on its insert card and product description. Nothing is decorative data; every composition makes a specific, verifiable claim about the world.
Genetics of Design is based in Glen Cove, New York.
