What is a pen plotter?

A pen plotter is a mechanical arm that holds a real pen and moves it across paper with high precision. Unlike a printer, which sprays ink through nozzles, a plotter physically draws each line. The result is real ink on real paper, with subtle variations in pressure and line quality that make every piece unique.

Are these prints or originals?

The shop sells archival giclée prints: digital reproductions of our pen-plotted works, made to order on fine-art paper and shipped with a signed data-provenance card. We also create pen-plotted originals (drawn in real ink, one-of-a-kind) and custom commissions, both available by direct inquiry at info@geneticsofdesign.io.

What ink and paper do you use?

Our prints are archival giclée reproductions on fine-art paper. Our pen-plotted originals are drawn with archival pens, including Sakura Pigma Graphic markers and gel pens, on artist-grade papers such as Stonehenge (White and Aqua Coldpress) and Bristol. The medium of an original is confirmed on inquiry.

Is the data in the artwork real?

Yes. Our pieces are derived from real scientific data: actual gene sequences, chromosomal coordinates, protein structures, and other biological datasets. Our background in bioinformatics and genetics keeps the data accurate. Each piece's description explains what data was used and how it was visualized.

How should I frame or display the artwork?

We recommend framing behind glass or acrylic with a mat to keep the print surface off the glazing. UV-protective glass will help preserve the colors over time. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight. For unframed pieces, store flat in a cool, dry place.

Do you accept commissions?

Yes. We create custom pieces including personalized portraits, DNA or gene visualizations from personal genetic data, and location-based maps. Commission work is handled case by case. Reach out at info@geneticsofdesign.io to get started.

How do you ship artwork?

All pieces are carefully packaged to prevent damage in transit. Unframed works are shipped flat between rigid boards in a protective sleeve. Framed pieces are wrapped and boxed with corner protectors. If your artwork arrives damaged, please contact us within 48 hours at info@geneticsofdesign.io with photos and we will arrange a replacement or full refund.

What is your return policy?

We offer refunds or exchanges within 30 days of delivery for unused items in original packaging. Custom commissions are non-refundable. Full details are on our Refund Policy page.
