Description

DNA replication errors accumulating rapidly across many generations of retroviral-style copying.

This is the companion to the high-fidelity frame. I replicated the same sentence across many generations, but with a per-character mutation rate roughly three orders of magnitude higher. Drift accumulates quickly, and the original sentence is unrecoverable within a small number of generations.

A high error rate is not carelessness. It is strategy: rapid drift lets viruses adapt quickly to new environments and evade immune defenses. Both rates serve their organisms, stability for the complex, adaptability for the swift. Companion to Mutation Drift (Human).

Provenance

The mutation rate is a relative parameter, not a calibration to any specific empirical figure. The contrast against the companion frame, Mutation Drift (Human), whose rate is roughly three orders of magnitude lower, is the subject. It illustrates the difference in replication fidelity between low-fidelity retroviral copying and high-fidelity germline DNA copying.
